Ford India’s Chennai Plant has achieved a milestone of manufacturing 1 million vehicles.
The 1 millionth vehicle to be produced is the new New Ecosport. At the same time, it has also achieved another milestone of assembling 1 million engines. Set up in 1999, Ford’s Chennai Plant is a 350 acre campus, which also houses a new Engine assembly unit, inaugurated in 2008. This engine assembly unit boasts Ford’s flexible production line, which has a capability to assemble both Petrol & Diesel Engines simultaneously.
The Chennai Plant currently manufactures Ecosport, Fiesta and Endeavour.The current installed capacity of the plant is to assemble 2 lakh vehicles and 3.4 lakh engines. It has a workforce of around 6,000. The Chennai Plant also serves as an export hub to over 40 markets like Europe, Middle East, ASEAN and Africa.
Other than the Chennai Plant, Ford also has a plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The Sanand plant has an installed capacity of 2,40,000 cars and 2,70,000 engines and produces the recently launched 2015 Ford Figo and Figo Aspire.
