Mahindra S101 is expected to be launched in the 3rd week of January 2016. The new upcoming SUV styled hatchback of Mahindra which is code-named as S101 is expected to compete with the Hyundai Eon, Renault Kwid and couple of models from Maruti’s stable like Wagon R & Celerio.
The main rival of Mahindra S101 will be Kwid as both the models are designed by considering SUV cues. The S101 is also expected to be successful like Kwid which got very positive response from Indian market by receiving 50,000 bookings within a month of its launch.
Mahindra S101 is expected to be powered by new in-house developed petrol and diesel engines . According to earlier sources it is expected to be powered by 1.2L Petrol engine and 1.5L diesel. It is also speculated that the 1.5L diesel mHawk80 engine will be equipped with AMT , similar to the recently launched TUV 3OO SUV.
Growing SUV trend in India is pushing makers to bring more SUV styled vehicles into the market. New segments such as under 4m SUVs (Quanto, Ecosport and TUV300) and recently launched micro SUV (Kwid) are emerged recently.
Major global OEM’s are concentrating in this segment to grab a good chunk of volume and the details of them are as follows
- Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Maruti Suzuki is going to launch its Mini SUV in 2016 festive season which is code-named as iM-4 . It is expected to be priced at Rs 4-6 lakhs and it may be further decreased due to its high levels of localization. Dimensions L X B X H: 3,679 X 1,579 X 1,478 (All dimensions are in mm)
- Tata Nexon: Tata is going to launch Nexon in 2017. It is targeted towards city commuters with improved quality standards by considering the Tata’s new design strategy Design next, Connect next.
- Honda is also expected to launch a Micro SUV which the details are not yet revealed.
However, other major OEM’s like Hyundai, Ford, Toyota etc have not commented anything about developing or launching Micro SUV’s in India.
