Volkswagen India will be launching the Polo GTI 3-door in India. It is expected to come into the Indian market in the month of September 2016.
VW Polo GTI 3-door is available globally in 1.8L TSI petrol engine which is a four-cylinder unit producing 188bhp and 320Nm of torque. VW India already has performance versions of Polo in the names of TSI and TDI for petrol and diesel respectively. The TSI engine is the 1.2L petrol and TDI is the 1.5L diesel.
The Polo GTI 3-door will be the CBU unit and it may cost around 20 lakhs. Currently the TSI and TDI polo variants available in India are at aprice of INR 8.58 lakhs (Ex-showroom Delhi).
Speaking about the introduction of GTI 3-door, Micheal Mayer the director of VW said:
“We want to keep it very pure; a hot hatch that offers performance, technology and comfort. I know that there is a compromise here, but people who buy this car, which is a fairly costly car, will have other cars in their garage to load five people on a regular basis”.
VW Polo GTI 3-door will be showcased by the company in the Auto Expo 2016. VW is confident that this vehicle is set to create a new segment in the country that definitely attracts enthusiast buyers. Keeping in view of the low demand witnessed by performance hatches like Abarth Punto, VW Beetle etc. it can be said that the GTI future will also follow the same way. High on Performance but low on customer demand. In India we find more enthusiasts in the magazines and websites but we seldom find them going into showrooms and buy cars what they call as adrenaline satisfying cars in their own enthusiast language. But it’s always good to see manufacturers not giving up on performance cars even though their sales are very low.
